Abstract: 

We consider the problem of identifying the symmetry group of a biological molecule from noisy cryo-EM projections with unknown viewing directions. Our approach is to estimate certain auto-correlation functions of the projections and compute their spectrum. According to a classical theorem of Klein, the "ranks" of the auto-correlation kernels encode the symmetry group of the molecule.  We test the theoretical solution to the symmetry detection problem on simulated data sets. This talk is based on undergoing research work.
